Violence erupted in Newcastle Emlyn at the weekend when a large number of people, understood to have included players of Newcastle Emlyn Rugby Club and Cardigan Rugby Club, clashed in the main street.

Trouble flared at licensed premises in Sycamore Street on Saturday night and fighting spilled onto the street, prompting some businesses people to close their doors.

A man attending a function in the town, and who specifically asked not to be named, said: "There was a big free-for-all and was quite frightening."

Both rugby clubs said they were unaware of any incident involving anyone connected with the clubs and there had been no complaints.

A police spokesperson said: "Officers attended at the scene and identified individuals concerned who were spoken to and suitably advised in relation to their conduct.

"The people were moved on and police remained at the scene to ensure there was no recurrence of the trouble.

"There were no arrests as police did not receive any complaints of assaults or criminal offences, and no damage was caused to property.

"There is no further police action involved," said the spokesperson.
