A GRAFFITI artist has added a splash of colour to the courtyard at Cardigan youth charity Area 43.

Early in the summer, the young people and staff at Area 43 had the idea to transform their plain, boring courtyard into a warm, interesting and welcoming outside space for the young people who use the centre at Pontycleifion.

Having been awarded funding from Cardigan Town Council and Cardigan Charity Fundraisers earlier in the year, it was in a position to commission a professional artist to work in consultation on the space.

Having researched graffiti artists in Wales and looking at their on-line portfolios, they were particularly impressed by the work of Peaceful Progress, aka Bryce Davies, from Cardiff.

Centre manager Lisa Head said: “The team at Area 43 got in touch with Bryce and explained the work they do, what the space is used for and the idea of what they wanted to create. Although they had no set plan or design in mind, just a broad theme of calm, openness and tranquility.

“They sent Bryce lots of photographs and measurements of the space and he agreed to take the commission. Over the following weeks and numerous emails, they agreed on a theme that what would work best within the space.”

On Tuesday, 4th September 2018, Bryce (Peaceful Progress) transformed the courtyard in one day. He produced a scene that resembles sitting on a bench, looking out to sea on the beautiful Ceredigion Coastal Path, surrounded by the stunning wildflowers that grow there.

“The courtyard is now a beautiful reminder of the stunning area that we live in, reinforcing the closeness of the coastal path and the positivity of being outdoors,” said Lisa.

“Seeing Bryce at work was a masterclass in graffiti art. The young people were inspired by his skill and professionalism. The image was exactly what was needed, giving a peaceful area to sit and relax.”

One client said: "I feel the design makes Area 43 feel calm and peaceful and brings vibrancy to the back area. It feels more open and less claustrophobic - it makes you feel as if you’re by the coast."

The transformation of the outside space coincides with Area 43 welcoming a new full-time member of staff with youth support worker Rachel Lewis looking forward to her role working with the young people of Cardigan.
