A NEW debt-counselling service is being launched in Cardigan.

Christians Against Poverty is a charitable organisation that will operate from the Mt Zion Baptist Church in Priory Street.

Centre manager Lynne Cunningham said: "We feel there is a real need for the service in this area.

"The statistics are quite frightening and many people think there is nothing out there to help them.

"Too many people are afraid to ask for help and feel ashamed as the red letters come through the door. People may not be able to pay a utility bill and so take out a loan and that can start them off on a downward spiral."

The role carried out by CAP is very similar to that performed by Citizens Advice "but with extras" said Lynne.

"As well as practical advice we also offer support and friendship to people. We may take someone out for a coffee or invite them to a meal as very often people in these situations are lonely and feeling isolated.

"A pastoral/holistic approach is also part of what we offer.

"And no, you don't have to be a Christian. We will help anyone regardless of their religious beliefs but we want to show the love of Jesus in a practical way."

The debt-counselling service is free and meetings will often take place in a person's own home, where the trained adviser/befriended will get to understand a person's problems and needs and then an approved financial plan can be drawn up.

"We will come up with a budget plan and if people agree with it, they will pay one monthly payment into CAP and we will negotiate with creditors and manage their bills," said Lynne.

"We will be alongside them all the way to help and encourage people as sometimes it is really hard to find that money. They will stop getting the phone calls and will no longer be afraid to answer the door."

The service is already operating but will officially launch on Sunday, September 23 at Mount Zion Church at 11am.
