Surfers to the rescue

TWO local surfers risked their lives to save holidaymakers at Llangrannog beach.

A woman got into trouble last Tuesday evening after swimming out to help her two children who were struggling in the heavy seas.

The incident happened shortly after 6pm when the lifeguards on duty had left for the day.

As the woman swam out to help she was swept away around the rocks and into the crashing waves.

Surfers Danny Oldfield and Peter Eagles spotted that they were in trouble. They, along with Ryan Beechey and Phil Blackwood, managed to take the children to a safe place, and the two surfers jumped back into the water to help the mother.

They managed to grab hold of the 37-year-old woman just in time, as she was struggling with the current.

They both held on to the woman and kept her afloat for up to an hour until New Quay lifeboat came to their rescue.

She was airlifted from the boat and taken by helicopter to Bronglais hospital, Aberystwyth, said to be suffering from hyperthermia and exhaustion and treated in intensive care.

In the meantime, Will Jones, a lifeguard on duty that day, had returned to help. The children were taken to the Pentre Arms, where manager Bradley Davies and staff looked after them.

The woman was discharged from hospital before the weekend.
