NEW maps of Cardigan have been erected in key locations across the town to give information to both visitors and locals.

The seven maps, which were commissioned and paid for by the town council, have been designed by Lisa Hellier, from Eglwyswrw, with the frames, made from Welsh oak and steel, designed and built by local award-winning designer Ben Cramp, of Jam Furniture.

The project to replace the existing town maps has certainly been a long time in the making.

“I did my first sketch of this map about 10 years ago,” said graphic designer and community artist Lisa, who was also responsible for designing the “Cardigan” knitted to celebrate the 900 year celebrations of Cardigan in 2010.

“I was also responsible for the original leaflet that was circulated a couple of years ago asking people what they thought of the idea.”

Former mayor Cllr Clive Davies secured the backing of the town council to fund the maps during his year in office and after 18 months hard work, he is delighted to finally see them in place.

“The old town maps were 20 years out of date and needed replacing,” said Cllr Davies.

“These new ones are absolutely stunning and we hope to keep updating them and adding key locations as things go on.”

Twelve seagulls are hidden in the map’s design for children to find, while it also ties in with the town app, free WiFi and new finger-posts which have all been introduced into Cardigan in recent months to make the town more visitor-friendly.
