NEW Quay’s two lifeboats were both called out last night (Wednesday July 11) following reports of a missing swimmer.

Following a Mayday call to the Coastguard, both lifeboats were paged and launched immediately at 6.47pm to search for a missing person in the water.

The alarm was raised by a vessel near Target Rock in New Quay as the person who had been spearfishing and snorkelling had not been seen for approximately 10 minutes.

But on their way to the search, the lifeboats were stood down as the swimmer had resurfaced.

The crew carried on to the vessel under instruction from the Coastguard to confirm the casualty was safe and well.

The lifeboats returned to station at 7.10pm and the all-weather lifeboat was left out on the mooring to be rehoused the next day.

Roger Couch, New Quay RNLI Lifeboat operations manager, said: “The alarm was raised with good intent, if in doubt always ask for help. We had an excellent turn out of crew and a great response time.”
