A TIVYSIDE pub’s community fund-raising efforts have brought in more than £6,000.

The Daffodil at Penrhiwllan has hosted a series of events to raise cash for Macmillan Wales and HUTS, a mental health support charity based in Newcastle Emlyn and which provides services across Ceredigion, Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire

A coffee morning and raffle was held at The Daffodil, for which more than 180 cakes were made and sold. Tickets to the Six-Nations Wales v France match in March and also tickets for the Scarlets v Toulon match in January were donated to the cause.

It was decided to hold a licensed raffle with the rugby match tickets and thousands of raffle tickets were printed and sold across the region by pub owners Hugh and Gill Matthews and staff member Julie Chapple, with their not-so-sturdy wallpapering table,

They sold raffle tickets on high streets and at rugby matches and rugby clubs in Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire, where Gill grew up.

"The highlight of our fundraising was a day spent at Parc y Scarlets where virtually every rugby fan we approached purchased ticket,” said Hugh and Gill.

“We met Scott Williams and were given a pair of his previously worn, grass-stained signed shorts from a Welsh international match for us to use at future fund-raising events at the Daffodil .

“Another great day was also spent at a Newcastle Emlyn Rugby Club home match - with our by then well-travelled wallpapering table - where we were given a warm welcome and fantastic local support.

“Thank you to all our loyal guests at The Daffodil and everyone in our local community who supported our fund-raising for these fantastic charities.

“A special mention and thanks must go to Castell Howell, Gomer Press, Barclays Bank (Newcastle Emlyn) and staff at Parc y Scarlets for their encouragement and support, which contributed to us raising a total of £6,260.”
