NEWCASTLE Emlyn is once again preparing to highlight its credentials as a Fair Trade town.

Fair Trade Fortnight will be held from Monday, February 26 to Sunday, March 11 and a series of events are planned in the town to coincide with the theme ‘Come on in’ with the idea being for people to see what the town can offer in terms of Fair Trade goods and services.

Jill Sutton, chairman of Newcastle Emlyn Traders, said: “We have come a long way since the first meeting back in November 2011 and we always look to put on something during Fair Trade Fortnight.

“It is an ideal chance to promote the issues surrounding Fair Trade but also it’s a feather in the cap of the town to be awarded its Fair Trade status and it helps put Newcastle Emlyn on the map.”

Among the events, there will be a Fair Trade pub quiz in the Pelican Inn on Thursday, March 1 at 7.30pm.

On Saturday, March 3, working alongside Teifiside Plastic Free Community, there will be a litter pick in the won from 10am and after that there will be a chance for families to enjoy interactive Fair Trade games and a display at Winnie’s @ No 11 on Sycamore Street.

On Monday, March 5, Newcastle Emlyn Girl Guiding is to host a ‘Come on in’ evening for friends and family at Holy Trinity Church community hall, while on Saturday, March 10, businesses in the town will be highlighting how they have embraced Fair Trade and the products they sell, with shops and cafes inviting customers to try Fair Trade treats.

It is also hoped there will be some form of exhibition, presentation and coffee morning in the Cawdor Hall on the Saturday.

A recent coffee morning help by Newcastle Emlyn Girl Guides raised nearly £100 to help the fair Trade group, while a grant has also been received from Hub Cymru Africa, funded by the Welsh Government.
