A CARDIGAN firm was in the national spotlight today as Prince Harry and his fiancee Meghan Markle were given a rapturous welcome as they began a day trip to Cardiff.

Meghan Markle picked a Welsh brand for her trip to Cardiff - wearing a pair of trousers made by Cardigan firm The Hiut Denim Company.

The firm and was set up in a former denim factory which closed after 35 years, leaving 400 people unemployed.

The firm says on its website: "That's why we have started The Hiut Denim Company. To bring manufacturing back home.

"To use all that skill on our doorstep. And to breathe new life into our town."

The company, which said it has a confidentiality agreement with its clients and was waiting to hear from Kensington Palace before commenting, said it had been inundated with calls since Ms Markle's appearance.

Ms Markle's trousers are thought to be the black Dina skinny fit - high-waist jeans which cost £175 and are available to be shipped from March onwards - although they will now be expected to sell out.

Harry and the American actress carried out a walkabout in the grounds of Cardiff Castle in the centre of the Welsh capital - after arriving an hour late.

They shook hands with countless fans - with Harry appearing to apologise to some for keeping them waiting in chilly conditions after the couple's train journey was delayed.

Royal fans had been waiting more than seven hours to get a glimpse of the prince and Ms Markle, gathering as early as 7am.

Ahead of their May wedding, the couple are touring the country to introduce Ms Markle to different towns and cities as she prepares to become a member of the royal family.
