MOTORISTS in Cardigan have been facing ‘chaos’ with roadworks on two major routes in and out of the town.

Cardigan bridge is closed to traffic all this week while essential drainage work is being carried out.

Diversion signs are in place taking south-bound traffic through Pont y Cleifion – the only problem being temporary lights have been set up there for pavement work and has meant long delays, with traffic grinding to a halt along Feidr Fair and backing up onto the main roundabout for the A487and A484.

One angry motorist told the Tivyside: “You could not have timed this better to cause chaos - it beggars belief.”

Another said: “I don’t know if the decisions to close the old bridge whilst simultaneously shutting down a traffic lane in Pont y Cleifion were made by the same person in the highways department but, if so, he should have first asked himself a question often posed by Dad’s Army’s Sergeant Wilson – ‘Do you think that’s wise?’”

Work at the bridge site is scheduled to finish tomorrow (Friday January 19).
