A MET Office yellow "be aware" warning of strong winds has been issued from 9pm tomorrow night (Wednesday, January 17) and lasts until 1pm on Thursday (Wednesday, January 18).

With the threat of ice and snow on high ground today, that will be followed by gusts of 60-70mph causing "large waves" on west Wales coasts.

The Met Office expects road, rail and ferry services to be hit and it is possible some bridges may be forced to close. Pembrokeshire County Council is already warning of possible closures of the Cleddau Bridge.

The wind is expected to cause power cuts and the Met Office said "injuries and danger to life from flying debris" were possible.

A Met Office spokesman said: “During Wednesday night and into Thursday there is the potential for gusts of 60-70 mph quite widely and a small chance of winds reaching 80 mph in places.

“The location of the most damaging winds is currently uncertain, although parts of northern and eastern England along with southern Scotland currently look more at risk. Along with the strong winds a spell of heavy rain can also be expected

“Large waves are expected to affect some western coasts with beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties.”
