CARDIGAN Foodbank has been ‘overwhelmed’ by the generosity of townsfolk and their donations in the run-up to the busy Christmas period.

The centre, based at the New Life Church at Quay Street and a member of the Trussell Trust network, handed out a record 713 three-day emergency food parcels between April and September this year.

Demand is continuing to grow as the festive season approaches and foodbank manager Alan Faunch said: “In the past few days we have helped 34 families and probably looking at more than 60 between now and Christmas.

“The response from the community in Cardigan has been overwhelming. Our big Tesco collection weekend brought in about 600kg of food, while the collection point at the store has also been averaging about three-quarters of a ton a month.

“We cannot thank everyone enough – it has just been astounding. Food donations are also being brought to our door, along with monetary contributions and the shelves are bursting with people’s generosity.

“We have used every single crate available to the Foodbank to store the foods and staff and volunteers are making their way around each crate to date it. I would like to also thank all those who are volunteering to help us during one of the busiest and most full periods the Foodbank here has known.”

The New Life Church will also be hosting a traditional Christmas dinner on Christmas Day at 1pm, where it is expecting to cater for up to 70 people.

“If anyone is interested in attending, pop in and let us know or give us a ring on Cardigan 615684,” said Alan. “Anyone who is in need or on their own will be welcome.”

Cardigan Foodbank has been supporting local families since 2009 and its running costs are around £8,600 per year, all of which is raised locally. Costs include warehouse space to sort and stack donated food and other overheads like utility bills and insurances.

“We would welcome any new offers of help with funding,” added Mr Faunch.
