A GROUP of friends, all members of the Tresaith Mariners Sailing Club, are cycling a total of 1,000 miles this month in aid of the Movember Foundation, a cancer charity to raise funds and awareness of prostate cancer.

The seven cyclists will cycle to and from each other’s homes across rural country lanes.

“It will be quite a challenge as two of us have really old, heavy bikes that are six kilos heavier than the other bikes taking part,” said Liz Howell.

“Members of the club always do something during November to raise money for Movember such as growing a moustache, but I couldn’t do that obviously, so we decided to an organise an event where we could all get involved,” added Liz.

Peter Jones, Steve Kings, Gareth Thomas, Andy Cushley, Owen Griffiths, Kristian Davies, Liz Howell, Dan Kempton and Alistair Sibley are all getting on their bikes and hope to raise a lot of money for this worthy cause that will help the one in eight men who will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lives.

“It’s been quite an event so far as we need babysitters, so it depends who can babysit and we all cycle from that person’s house to another.

"There’s no telling where we cycle to and from and we’ve already cycled nearly 500 miles with another 500 to go. The total elevation cycled is more than 41,000 feet equivalent to Everest and Mount Fuji put together,” said mum of two Liz, from Newcastle Emlyn.

And as well as raising money for the national charity, the Tresaith Mariners Club has also been chosen as one of Cardigan store's Tesco Bags of Help beneficiaries, to help them buy new boats for its junior training and racing, and keep sailing affordable to all.

“These new boats will help us to teach even more young people and families to learn to sail and become more confident in the sea. We need your help to vote for us!

"To vote, you will need to make a purchase within store of any value. You will receive one token per transaction and it's not necessary to purchase a carrier bag in order to receive a token. Then look for our project - Junior Squad Sailing Dinghies Grant and put the token in the correct slot,” added Liz.
