AN award-winning micro-bakery is hoping to open a new restaurant and coffee shop in Cardigan.

Crwst is currently run by Osian and Catrin Jones from their home in Blaenffos and are a familiar sight at local markets and food fairs, along with their products in local shops.

But they are now looking to expand the business and are hoping to open their new venture at what is currently Siop y Cardi at Priory Street.

Siop y Cardi owners Keith and Cecilia Williams are retiring and closing their hardware and household goods business after more than 20 years.

Now Crwst want to move into the prime location at the corner of Priory Street and Morgan Street and have submitted a planning application to Ceredigion County Council outlining their proposals for a change of use to a deli/bakery/restaurant and coffee shop.

Crwst has been in business little more than a year and recently received a ‘highly commended’ at the 2017 Rural Business Awards, reaching the final five in the UK in the Rural Entrepreneur of the Year category.

“We feel like Cardigan needs something like this,” said Catrin.

“There will be a café, takeaway and deli with local produce and on an evening it will operate as a restaurant. We are looking for an industrial look, but with a warm and cosy feel to the place where people can relax.”

Osian originally trained as a chef at Hammet House in Llechryd and has also worked at 5* boutique hotel Cathedral 73 in Cardiff and the opening of the restaurant would be the next natural progression.

“We are really excited about the plans and it is something we have always wanted to do and this seems like the right time and place,” said Catrin.

“We will still be carrying on with the bakery side of things and supplying local shops as that is what we started out doing and it still means so much to us and is our passion.”

The new business could mean as many as six to eight new jobs being created and they would love to be open by the spring of next year, depending on planning permission.
