TWO Cardigan fundraisers will be taking on a marathon effort to raise cash for Diabetes UK.

Taxi driver Paul Davies, 60, and local authority worker Pam Morris, 57, will be tackling the London Marathon Walk along with around 500 other people on Saturday, September 23.

The 26.2-mile route – the traditional distance of the marathon - will take in all the sights and sounds of London. Starting out early from Chiswick on the River Thames, the walk will include such famous landmarks as St Paul’s Cathedral, Tower Bridge, Big Ben, Buckingham Palace and the London Eye along the way.

The intrepid duo, who are both part of Cardigan Charity Fundraising Appeal which has raised more than £25,000 for local causes in the past four years, will be doing the challenge off their own backs and hope to complete the marathon trek in around nine hours and raise £500 each.

“We started training back in March, doing four or five miles,” said Paul, who along with Pam was planning a final 22-mile training walk around Cardigan’s outlying hills before the big day.

“I cannot run a marathon because my back has had it so the next best thing was to find one I could walk. We think by training here, London will hopefully seem much flatter!

"This is a huge challenge mentally and physically for us both."

Both Paul and Pam have seen the effects diabetes can have on their families and it was for that reason they chose the charity.

And as if that’s not enough, the following weekend, Paul and Pam have organised an evening of entertainment featuring Elvis Desley and Kirilee at Cardigan Rugby Club, again in support of Diabetes UK.

There will be an auction and raffle at the event on Saturday, September 30 at 7pm, with tickets priced at £5. For more information, contact Paul on 07971 469831.
