PUPILS from across the Tivyside area have been celebrating their A level successes.

Head teacher at Ysgol Gyfun Emlyn, Hugh Thomas, said: “The school is extremely pleased to report another set of excellent A-level results.

“The consistent success over recent years is a tribute to our hard-working students, the support of parents and the dedication of our excellent staff at Ysgol Gyfun Emlyn.

“One hundred per cent of pupils achieved the level 3 threshold of at least two A level qualifications or equivalent at A*-E. A total of 29 per cent of grades were A* or A, with 54 per cent of grades at A*-B and 77 per cent of grades were at A*-C.”

Notable successes included Charlotte Husnjak (A*, A*, A*, A), Lucia Reynolds (A*, A, A, A) and Harvey Upton (A*, A, A, A). At AS Level, Charlotte Brookes, Suzie Coldman, Cerys Legg and Harvey Williams all achieved high grades.

Harvey Upton is on his way to Imperial College in London to study design engineering, while Charlotte Husnjak is going to Cambridge University to study education, English, drama and arts.

She said: “It is great to know all the hard work has paid off and I think just about everyone got the results they wanted.

“I was nervous before I got my results and even dreamed I got a ‘K’! I hope to become a teacher in the future.”

Mr Thomas added: “The school is very proud of all the students, nearly all of whom have gained a place in their first-choice university. I would like to congratulate all of our students and express my gratitude to the staff for their hard work and to the parents and governing body for their support.

“We wish all our students every success in the future.”

At Ysgol Uwchradd Aberteifi, 100 per cent of year 13 students achieved the level 3 threshold (at least two A level qualifications at grades A*-E or equivalent). 
Head teacher Nicola James said: “The staff and governors are very pleased with these A level results, which are richly deserved by our hardworking students. 
"All our year 13 students secured their first-choice university place this year which is outstanding. They are all now well placed to lead fulfilling and productive lives.  
We congratulate the students on their achievements, and I wish them all every success for the future. I thank the staff for their hard work and commitment, and I thank all the parents for their continued support too."

Ysgol y Preseli has once again returned outstanding results. Of the 84 students who sat A Levels at the school in 2017, 35 per cent of grades were awarded at A*-A; 85 per cent at A*-C and 99 per cent A*-E.

Headteacher Michael Davies thanked the pupils and teachers for their hard work and dedication along with the parents, governors and the wider community for their continued support.

He said “This is yet another impressive set of results and I am delighted that so many of our students have done so well.

“I am particularly pleased that the vast majority have attained places at the universities of their choice, apprenticeships and employment and all at the school wish them every success in the future.”

The first Year 13 pupils of Ysgol Bro Teifi at Llandysul collected their A-Level results. The vast majority managed to secure their first-choice place at university and there was a notable increase in the number of A* and A grades from last year with 24.8 per cent managing to attain the highest grades.

Head teacher Robert Jenkins said: “Many have chosen to travel down the M4 to study a wide variety of subjects in Cardiff with others venturing to York to study law, Manchester to study midwifery and Bristol to study veterinary nursing.

“Pupils also succeeded in gaining apprenticeship places in locations such as BTG Protherics and the Urdd. Congratulations and good luck to them all as they take the next step in their career or enter the world of academia.”

Across Wales, this year’s A-level results show:

• 75.3% gained A* to C, the highest since 2009, with 25% achieving A*-A.

• In maths, Wales again outperformed England at A* and A* to C, with 19.4% gaining A*, and 80.4% gaining A* to C.

• There have been increases at A* in Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

• At A* to C the results have gone up in Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Geography.

• For all subjects the performance of both male and females learners has improved across all of the grades.

The Welsh Baccalaureate results show:

• 94.0% of candidates achieved the Skills Challenge Certificate.

• 78.7% of candidates passed the Advanced Welsh Baccalaureate.
