CARDIGAN Art Society (CAS) has been named Art Club of the Year 2017 at the recent prestigious Patchings Art Festival in Nottingham, beating entries from 45 art clubs throughout the UK to take the coveted top prize.

Following the exhibition at Patchings, a selection of CAS’s winning work will now be featured in the Painters Online magazines ‘The Artist’ and ‘Leisure Painter’.

The winning entry was composed of five works by Clare Howell, David Clinch, Jan Brown, John Edwards and Helen Rowlands.

“It is the first time we had entered the competition and we are delighted to have won,” said secretary Jan Brown.

“I think one of the things in our favour was that we had good examples of five different genres of works and that pretty much reflects how diverse a group we are.”

To celebrate the success and to support the local community, Cardigan Art Society will be donating its prize of £500 of Jacksons art materials to HUTS workshop in Newcastle Emlyn.

HUTS is the only charity of its kind in West Wales supporting adults with mental health challenges, running a well-equipped craft workshop, where members can boost their life-skills and confidence and explore their creativity through artistic expression.

Formed in 1964, Cardigan Art Society is a friendly association of amateur and professional artists whose aim is to promote, encourage, and develop creativity and appreciation of all forms of visual art through exhibitions, events, lectures and workshops.

This year the society is also planning to hold a new digital art competition to encourage young emerging artists throughout Wales, with a first prize of £500.

Cardigan Art Society is always open to new members, whatever age, ability, or artistic interest.
