THE signs that proudly signify Newcastle Emlyn as a fairtrade town were officially unveiled on Friday.

Carmarthen East and Dinefwr MP Jonathan Edwards was invited to mark the occasion.

Jill Sutton, from the Fair Trade steering committee, said: “We started this campaign to become a Fair Trade town back in 2011, finally getting Fair Trade status in 2014.

“We have had tremendous support from the town council and everyone in the town and now with these signs, it is very, very visible to visitors that we are a Fair Trade town.

“It is all about community involvement and everyone coming together.”

MP Jonathan Edwards said: “One of my favourite sayings is ‘think globally but act locally’ and that is what Fair Trade embodies. It is based on local action to succeed in looking to address imbalances in globalisation.

“The system has to work for everyone, not just the elite and that’s why movements like this are so important.

“Ammanford was the first Fair Trade town in Wales and it shows how quickly an idea can build.

“With the uncertainties surrounding Brexit, Fair Trade will be a fundamental principle of any new policy for the UK government. It is about to become a very big, live political issue and we can shape the future for many generations to come.”

Town mayor Cllr Peter Lewis said: “The Fair Trade group has worked tirelessly to get this done and we are delighted to support them and encourage the use of Fair Trade products and help to improve conditions in the developing world.”
