THREE North Pembrokeshire Schools have been celebrating after gaining their Sustainable Schools Awards.

Ygsol Bro Ingli in Newport and Ysgol Eglwyswrw both achieved silver awards, while Ysgol Wdig earned a bronze.

Schools earn awards by demonstrating how they include sustainability and global issues through curricular and extracurricular activities. The scheme is unique to Pembrokeshire and has been running for 12 years

Ysgol Bro Ingli investigated renewable energy by making working wind turbines at school. It also visited Carew Mill to look at the tidal power.

The pupils also conducted an energy saving campaign “Operation Energy” in school, which led to a decrease in the school’s energy use.

The school also worked on water towards the award. It studied the wildlife in the Afon Nyfer and learned how pollution affects it with Pembrokeshire Coast National Park.

The school also looked at marine plastics and the negative impacts it has on sea life.

Ysgol Eglwyswrw provided pupils with opportunities to explore the links between community citizenship, waste, litter and energy.

Pupils visited AJ Recycling to see a local business involved in waste and recycling while Western Power engineers brought their equipment to the school to explain how their work keeps our homes supplied with electricity.

Younger pupils in the school learned about services in their community and pupils hosted a community sustainability event at the school which was a great success.

“I’m sure the students had great fun studying for their sustainability awards,” said Pembrokeshire County Council cabinet member for the environment and Welsh language, Cllr Cris Tomos.

“It’s a hands-on way of learning about an important topic that’s affects all of us; both now and in the future.”
