PUPILS from Ysgol Uwchradd Aberteifi are celebrating after their racing car project returned to the track with a victory to qualify for an international final.

The STEM racing club ‘Rasio Aberteifi Tigers’ from the school returned to action this month at the Greenpower Anglesey motor circuit heat.

A total of 25 cars were on the grid, including the current overall international champion as Project X, the Aberteifi Tigers’ car, lined up on the grid.

In the first race they managed a creditable fourth place but then followed that up in the second race with victory.

This was an excellent performance by a new team made up of Year 8 and Year 9 pupils. As a result of this performance the team automatically qualify for the international final at Rockingham in October.

Before then, the team will race again in Castle Combe in September to try to hone their driving and racing skills and see if they can improve their distance covered during the one-and-a-half hour race.

Teamwork and good preparation paid dividends in ensuring a great result for the new team and school. The team also really looked the part after new race suits had been provided by T.I. Davies a’i Fab builders and also sponsorship by the Hiut Denim Co.

The school are very grateful for any sponsorship for this very worthwhile STEM activity.

Since the creation of the STEM racing club some eight years ago, 82 pupils have benefited from being part of the Rasio Aberteifi Tigers club.

Having raced at Silverstone, Goodwood, Castle Combe and other circuits, the experiences experienced by the pupils by being part of the club will hopefully remain with them for the rest of their lives.

Once the pupils reach Year 10, younger pupils are requested to apply to be part of the future team.

More information about the popular international competition can be found on the Greenpower website www.greenpower.co.uk. The challenge is to design, build and race an electric car and to inspire young people to excel in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) studies
