LOCAL MP and Plaid Cymru's transport spokesperson Jonathan Edwards MP has received confirmation from the UK Treasury that Wales is set to receive a share of the £1billion 'road revolution' pledged by the Westminster government.
The £1billion development is set to be spent entirely in England, meaning that Wales, according to the Barnett Formula, will get approximately £50million based on population as a result.
Mr Edwards has urged the Labour Welsh Government to ring-fence this money in an attempt to rebalance the economy and improve Wales' creaking infrastructure.
Carmarthen East and Dinefwr MP Mr Edwards said: "I welcome the UK Treasury's confirmation that Wales is set to receive its rightful share as a result of the £1billion 'road revolution' promised to England.
"It is a refreshing change to see the UK Government correctly label infrastructure spending as 'England-only' meaning a Barnett share for Wales. All too often, Welsh taxpayers are forced to foot the bill for projects such as HS2 built entirely in England but claimed to benefit the whole of the UK.
"Based on population, Wales should receive around £50million each year as a result of this development. The Labour Welsh Government should ring-fence this money in order to invest in roads in all parts of the country.
"Wales' transport network is creaking at the seams. It's time for the Labour Welsh Government to stop concentrating investment in the south east of the country while neglecting the rest - particularly rural areas.
"Plaid Cymru has long argued for a genuine rebalancing of our economy in order to spread prosperity to all parts of Wales. Labour must join us in pursuing this rather than repeat the mistakes of the Tories in London by overheating the economy in one geographical area."
