PLANS are being drawn up to save an iconic Pembrokeshire pub and turn it into a community-run asset.

The Tafarn Sinc in the village of Rosebush has been for sale for some time at an asking price of £295,000. The owners have said they will close the doors before Christmas whether the property is sold or not. There have been no bids so far.

Now the question is being asked of local residents - who wants the challenge of ensuring the future of the quintessentially Welsh pub and restaurant?

Brian and Hafwen Davies have been at the helm for a quarter of a century. They have developed a successful business and created a unique atmosphere by hanging flitches from the ceiling as well as agricultural artefacts from days gone by.

Even the portrait of the one eyed preacher, Christmas Evans, on the mantelpiece, can be seen keeping a beady one eye on the proceedings.

Such is the concern locally that the pub could be lost that a public meeting to consider buying the property in the name of the community has been arranged.

The meeting will be held at Neuadd Maenclochog on Wednesday, July 12 at 7.30pm.

Crymych county councillor, Cris Tomos, a senior officer with PLANED (Pembrokeshire Local Action Network for Enterprise and Development), who has vast experience in the field of community initiatives, will be present.

“The intention of the public meeting is to ascertain if the local inhabitants are keen to buy shares for a minimum price of £200,” said Cllr Tomos.

“Individuals can buy more than one share of course. Tafarn Sinc was built in 1876 and therefore only 1,876 shares will be available.

“As Tafarn Sinc is so well-known people from beyond the area and across the globe will probably be keen to invest their money as the scheme gathers momentum. Reaching the goal of selling 1,876 shares will raise £375,200.”

Also present will be Shan Williams, of Cardigan 4CG, who also has vast experience in the field of community initiatives. Both will be able to explain and answer questions regarding the nitty gritty of the venture. It could be an exciting venture but local support is essential.

There are numerous examples across the country of community companies running successful hostelries. Go along with your queries and be the first to buy a share.
