CARDIGAN Library will complete its controversial move to Morgan Street in the town next month.

Morgan Street Council Integrated Centre will re-open its doors on July 10 following work carried out by Ceredigion County Council which has resulted in what it describes as a ‘bespoke’ council facility housing all its services in one location.

As a result of this, it has been possible to vacate the privately-owned Canolfan Teifi facility, centralising all council services in one location. The centre will incorporate a library, and staff from customer services, social care and lifestyle services.

The existing Cardigan Library will close on June 24 and the payments office will close on 7 July.

Plans to relocate the library drew strong objections from town residents when they were revealed, including access problems, parking problems, a lack of computer facilities and that it would be located on a very busy road and at a ‘dangerous’ junction.

Letters to the Tivyside Advertiser described it as a ‘complete waste of money and time’ but council officials argue it will mean significant annual revenue savings which will support the retention of council services in the town centre.

Cllr Ray Quant, cabinet member with responsibility for technical services and corporate services said, “Bringing everything under one roof will be of benefit to the people of Cardigan, staff and the council. We look forward to welcoming all to utilise the new facilities.”

An official opening ceremony by the council’s chairman, Cllr Lynford Thomas, will be held in September.
