VISITORS to Poppit Sands can now walk, cycle or ride to the beach more safely thanks to a new multi-user path.

The 500-metre path runs alongside the single-lane B4546 between the Webley Hotel and the coastpath at Poppit Sands.

The work was carried out thanks to a £40,000 Welsh Government grant obtained by Pembrokeshire County Council.

The funding bid received strong support from local County Councillor Mike James, GRWP Llwybr Poppit Path group, Llwybrau Llandudoch, and the Community Council who have all campaigned for a safer link between the beach and the village.

“For many years it has been difficult to travel safely from St. Dogmaels to Poppit Sands beach by any means other than by car,” said county council countryside access officer, Derrick Thomas.

“It’s a year-round problem but especially noticeable during the summer season when tourism is at its peak.”

He added that it is hoped that more funding can be acquired in the future to extend the path so that it continues all the way to the village.

Cllr Mike James, county councillor for St Dogmaels, said: “I’ve been impressed by the speed with which the county council responded to the funding opportunity put forward by the Welsh Government.

“I’m also impressed by how well the local community and the officers have worked together as a team to carry out this work.”

The work was carried out by local contractors GD Harries.
