TWO Bwlchygroes brothers and a friend are on top of the world after setting a new world record at the London Marathon.

Ian and Evan Williams, along with Graham O’Loughlin, smashed the Guinness World Record for the fastest marathon in a three-person costume as they scorched round the iconic 26 miles 385 yards course in an amazing three hours 13 minutes and nine seconds - around an hour and a half quicker than the existing record.

The trio ran in an inflatable 4m long ‘head band’ to raise money for the Heads Together mental health campaign and have so far raised £2,500 for the charity headed up by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry.

But they also have another big fund-raising run coming up in May, where they hope to take the total up to £30,000.

Evan, 34, whose parents run Bwlchygroes Farm Feeds and who went to Ysgol y Preseli with brother Ian 32, said: “It was a fantastic day. The atmosphere and noise around the whole course was just incredible and you could barely hear yourself think.

“We were slightly disappointed not to break the three-hour barrier but we are chuffed to bits and can’t complain. From 20 miles on it was tougher than we thought it would be and it really kicked in.”

Friend Graham probably found it the toughest of the three. His wife had recently given birth to their second child and his training schedule had suffered as a result.

“It was great to get the official Guinness World Record. The officials were there at the start and the finish and the record has now been ratified.” said Evan, who added he would ‘not be walking too far’ the following day as he headed into work in London.

“It’s great to have that certificate and it makes all the hard work of the past six months worthwhile. We are definitely looking ahead to next year now and a different challenge.”

Not content with their marathon exploits, the brothers will now be looking to build on that at the Hyde Park 5km run on May 20 where they are looking for more than 180 runners to complete the course – all joined together of course – to raise more money for Heads together
