A Cardigan woman and her dog will be walking 1000 miles this summer from Cardigan to Skye to raise money for three charities that are very close to their hearts.

Lisa Flude and Meg the dog will be setting out on April 1 in a campervan will not return home for five months on August 31.

Lisa is walking to raise money for the Air Ambulance and Haemochromatosis Society whilst Meg will be walking her way up the country to raise money for the Dogs Trust.

“I had an idea I wanted to go walking, a good distance, without a plan, just to walk wherever I fancied in that moment. As the idea formed I decided I was going to walk 1000 miles and try to raise some money for causes close to my heart. It then became clear that in order to engage charities I had to have something of a schedule,” said Lisa.

This will be a tough challenge for Lisa has scoliosis and quite a severe curve in my spine and

Haemochromatosis.

She said: “Haemochromatosis is a common but little diagnosed genetic condition of iron overload and I was diagnosed four years ago. I had never heard of it, none of my friends had but amazingly my brother also has it. Our bodies would normally take on iron we need from food and excrete it but with Haemochromatosis we don't get rid of the iron and so it builds up in the body.”

There’s no set target for the pair but Lisa would like to raise enough to say that she walked £10 a mile which would give her a £10,000 to donate to the charities.

“I have never attempted anything like this before. I like to walk and do so daily with the dogs, this is on a much grander scale,” said Lisa.

“I'm feeling excited about the challenge of course but also a little anxious. As I have not been away from home for so long I think I shall miss it and my wonderful family and friends.”

Aldi Cardigan, St Dogmaels Market and the Ceredigion Council are allowing Lisa to fundraise on their properties.

They will also be at Cardigan Tesco bag packing February 25 and on Pendre by the Guildhall on Saturday, March 4.
