A Dinas man continued his late wife's fundraising legacy for Blood Bikes Wales (Pembrokeshire) with a sponsored head shave at Hotel Plas Hyfryd last week.

Andrew Watson's late wife, Sarah, was a stalwart fundraiser for the Blood Bike service. She had Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease, a neuro muscular wasting disease, and died last year after a long period of illness.

Sarah, originally from St Dogmaels, was a staunch supporter of the blood bike service and, last December, Blood Bikes Pembrokeshire's new Suzuki motorbike was named in her memory.

Blood Bike Wales is a group of volunteers who help to transport blood supplies, plasma, breast milk, documents and other items between hospitals out of hours. Every £1 spent by Blood Bikes Wales saves the NHS £5.

Andrew, who describes himself as a biker at heart, held a sponsored head shave at Blood Bikes Wales Pembrokeshire's monthly meeting last Thursday, January 26. Sarah's daughter, Vienna, watched as he raised money in memory of her mum.

His lovely locks were shorn at the end of the meeting, raising around £200 for the charity. In memory of Sarah he kept his beard.

The Blood Bikes charity is close to Andrew's heart not only because of its connection to Sarah but because he received blood transfusions following a biking accident in 2008 in which he lost his leg.

The Blood Bikes supporters at the meeting contributed £80 towards the head shave.

"These are all volunteers who give their time as well as their money to support the blood bikes," he said.

"Thank you to all the people who have contributed to this event. I will be continuing to support this group of worthy people as long as I am able to."
