Free Wi-Fi in Cardigan has moved a step closer as Menter Aberteifi has received support from Cynnal y Cardi for the first phase of a project.

The provision of free Wi-Fi By will allow anyone in the town access to the internet without any cost.

The move will also benefit anyone who cannot access the internet from home.

Working with the Town Centre Partnership, over the next few months, a consultation and engagement programme will take place with town businesses and organisations to find out what equipment will be needed to cover the whole of the town centre and to discover the full cost of the proposal.

Following the consultation, organisers will submit an application of a second round of European funding.

Cynnal y Cardi, administered by Ceredigion County Council, is supported under the LEADER scheme which is supported through Welsh Government rural communities programme.

There is already evidence that tourists prefer places where Wi-Fi is freely available and there is an increasing number of “digital nomads” who travel around during their working day but still need internet access.

Although free Wi-Fi can already be picked up at town venues and cafes, the service will fill in the gaps and free up space on those systems,

Complementing the free Wi-Fi will be a series of information beacons that can keep visitors up-to-date with special offers or local events via their mobile phones.
