A Crymych business woman refused to be admitted into hospital so she could appear in court and admit drink-driving last week.

Meinir Devonald, 51, of Crymych, pleaded guilty to driving while more than three times the legal alcohol limit when she appeared before Haverfordwest magistrates on Tuesday.

The court heard that Devonald’s Mini Cooper was spotted swerving in its lane while on the A487 at Blaenffoss on December 10.

Vaughan Pritchard-Jones, prosecuting, said: “Officers on patrol saw a vehicle being driven erratically.

"It was swerving within its lane, so officers stopped it and spoke to the driver.

“They say she was smelling strongly of intoxicating liquor.”

Devonald was found to have 110mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath, when taken to the police station, the legal limit is 35mg.

Mr Pritchard-Jones added: “She did not appear to be in total control of the vehicle.”

Maggie Hughes, defending, told the bench that Devonald had previously held a clean driving licence and had health problems which she should have been hospitalised for over the weekend.

She said: “Mrs Devonald refused point blank to go into hospital as she wanted this hearing to go ahead today.

A hospital bed will now be found for her and her husband is seeking in-house rehabilitation.”

Miss Hughes added: “She says she is now at crisis point and hopes to be able to salvage a very sad situation.

“She assures the court that she is deeply remorseful.

"She had driven a very short distance, about five miles from her home.

"She is clearly relived that she did not cause any harm to anyone, and says her actions will not be repeated.”

Magistrates disqualified her from driving for 28 months and fined her £300.

She was also ordered to pay £85 costs and a £30 victim surcharge.
