CARDIGAN Castle will have the perfect present for visitors this Christmas, following the launch of its mobile phone app.

The app, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, will go live on December 10 – the first day of the castle's weekend-long Christmas fair.

The app gives mobile users 900 years of history at the swipe of a screen.

It includes interactive tours and maps, audio and video, restoration photos, 360-degree panoramas for history fans plus a treasure hunt, and games and activities for the kids.

The bilingual app has been developed by software designers Locly. the company is also currently working on a Ceredigion app and has carried out similar projects for Cadw and the National Eisteddfod.

Visitors to the castle will also receive notifications delivered straight to their mobile as they walk around the site, thanks to the latest i-beacon technology.

Castle facilities officer Sue Lewis said: “Cardigan Castle is one of the first tourist attractions in Ceredigion to use this latest technology.

"It’s an exciting development for the castle and shows that even though it is 900 years old it still keeps up with the latest trends.”

The Christmas Fair, part of Cardigan’s Festive Fortnight, is due to be held on Saturday, December 10, and Sunday, December 11, from 11am to 3pm

The fair will include over 40 stalls, Santa’s grotto, live music and festive food.

Entry to the castle over the weekend is free.

The castle app will be available to download the app from the App Store and Google Play.
