November 20 marks 100 years since John Elwyn, the renowned artist, was born in Adpar, Newcastle Emlyn. As one of Wales’ most distinguished artists, the area, including its farms, chapels, fields and winding roads are vividly celebrated in his paintings.

He attended Adpar County Junior School and Llandysul County Grammar School, and one of his many paintings can be seen at the new super school at Bro Teifi in Llandysul. His paintings are from memory and are evocative interpretations of the local landscape and natives of his area.

In 1956, he was awarded ‘Gold Medal for Fine Art’ at the National Eisteddfod of Wales in Aberdare and nearly 10 years later was invited to become Honorary Member of the Royal Cambrian Academy of Art. 1976 saw the artist as Fine Art Adjudicator (with Kyffin Williams) at the National Eisteddfod of Wales held in Cardigan.

Summer of last year, friends and supporters of his works erected a plaque at Emlyn Mill, Adpar on the property where John Elwyn was born.
