Mencap Ceredigion has joined forces with See Ability UK to promote better eye care amongst people with a learning disability and will be soon be delivering training workshops in Ceredigion.

See Ability UK, is one of the oldest specialist organisations for people with visual impairment in the world, delivering services for over 200 years.

The Charity, have recently worked in partnership with the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and College of Optometrists to publish quality standards to ensure the provision of accessible eye care services for people with learning disabilities.

These provisions include training programs on good eye care for people with learning disabilities which are designed to be run by people with a learning disability.

Mencap Ceredigion, which is the leading charity for people with a learning disability in the County is the only organisation in Wales to be chosen to deliver these Training programs.

Jan Kench, Chair of Mencap Ceredigion said: "We are extremely pleased that we have been chosen to deliver these important training programs. We know from recent data that people with learning disabilities are 10 times more likely to have serious eye problems than others and that 6 out of 10 will need to wear glasses. "Our aim, with the support of See Ability, is to provide the best eye care training and awareness to people with a learning disability in Ceredigion."

Scott Walker, Eye care and vision development officer for See Ability visited the training team in Aberaeron recently to offer training and resources and who will also be closely monitoring the success of the program.

The work of Mencap Ceredigion is done by volunteers and exists through donations only.
