A local food shop has been named ‘Best Independent Retailer in Wales 2016’ by the 2016' by readers of Great British Food Magazine.

Llwynhelyg Farm Shop found out about the win in this annual competition via Twitter on August 16.

Owner Jenny said : “We could hardly believe our eyes. A big thank you to everyone who has voted for us. We love putting Ceredigion and Welsh food and drink on the map.”

Llwynhelyg Farm Shop has been running for 33 years can be found in Sarnau, just north of Cardigan.

It is run by husband and wife team Teifi and Jenny Davies as well as a great team of local staff.

The shop started on a small scale to supplement the income of their smallholding - selling home grown vegetables and milk.

But it has evolved into a thriving & successful business which now sells the very best in food and drink produced locally.

Teifi said: “We specialise in sourcing products from small scale producers and have around 130 suppliers from Wales. In fact, the shop probably has the best display of Welsh food and drink in Wales. It's a tardis of delight; small but brimming with the very best produce you can buy.”

Some of their local produce include Mhile Distillery & Teifi Cheese as well as a full range of Rachel’s Dairy products.

Jenny commented: “On the farm we grow potatoes, which took first prize at Cardigan Show this year and our farmhouse kitchen produces tasty homemade pies, cakes, savouries and ready meals.

“We are sometimes nicknamed 'Sarnau Cheese Shop', as we are very well known for the display of Welsh cheeses, which at the last count was around 60 varieties in stock.”

This is not the first award the food shop has won over the years but it came as a surprise.

"This win will definitely keep our profile up. Our customers always share our successes - they help make the shop what it is today,” said Jenny

“We've seen such amazing changes to the Welsh food and drink industry over the last 30 years - Wales is now definitely a place to visit for local food and has an international name on the world stage.”
