It’s not every day you’d decide to walk to the top of Ben Nevis – and in the dark! But tackling the highest mountain in the British Isles at midnight is exactly what husband and wife, Chris and Lisa Thomas of Pencwarre Farm near Cardigan will face head on next month.

The walk, in aid of Alzheimers Charity UK will see Chris and Lisa facing the mountain which stands at 1,346 metres above sea level. Based in the Scottish Highlands, close to the town of Fort William, reaching its peak in daylight is a gruelling task, let alone in the black of night!

"We will make the climb by torch and moonlight to reach the summit, then descend in daylight with breathtaking views of the Highlands below. It’s an amazing opportunity to take on a tough trekking challenge like this but we are both looking forward to the challenge of walking rocky, steep terrain," explained Chris, the Store Manager at Wynnstay in Cardigan.

Chris’s grandmother, Viv Morris, is currently at respite as she suffers from Alzheimers, and Chris decided he would complete the walk in aid of the charity.

"We saw the Midnight Challenge being advertised on facebook and seeing as we’d already completed the Swansea half marathon last year for the Wales Air Ambulance and the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution, we thought we would support a charity close to home this time," added Chris, a father to four year old Osian and Mali, three.

The pair has been training hard since December.

"We’ll manage it. We both have plenty of determination and we are looking forward. We walk a lot on the Preseli Mountains and we try to keep fit and as healthy as we can. We’ve never been to Ben Nevis and it will be a new experience for us both, but we are determined to complete the challenge," said Chris.

The Cardigan Charity Fundraising Appeal is organising a fun horse ride on June 26 starting from Bwlchygroes near Ffostrasol in aid of the Alzheimers Society and to support Chris and Lisa in their challenge. And also a thank you to cardigan charity fundraising appeal for their support in organising the fun ride.
