One Cardigan resident came in for scores of admiring glances and comments as he attended the annual Barley Saturday celebrations attired in a waistcoat, hat and tie adorned with nearly 600 badges.

For the past 20 years or so Alun ‘Bara’ Rees a retired bread roundsman, has attended most local events, including the weekend stallion show and parade, annual pleasure fair and St David’s Day celebrations wearing his colourful waistcoat.

The 75-year-old started collecting badges as a hobby and family and friends in the area going on holiday brought back badges.

The waistcoat has become truly international with metal, plastic and leather accessories from all over the world including the USA, Australia, New Zealand, most of the South American and European countries, but his favourite is from his home village of St Dogmaels.

Alun has completely covered the front of the waistcoat and the back is filling up.

One drawback is the weight of the waistcoat – his wife Nan has to help him put it on and after mixing with the large crowds on Saturday he admitted he was glad to take it off and sit down.
