Eglwyswrw YFC members swapped their overalls for cycling shorts as they peddled their way to the end of the UK raising over £16,000 for charity.

Eighteen members volunteered to cycle or drive the vital back-up vehicles from Eglwyswrw to Lands End in Cornwall.

Chairman at the time, Lucy Williams decided she wanted to make her stamp on the year by organising the charity cycle following in the footsteps and tyre tracks of past members who did a similar cycle many years ago.

Over £16,000 was raised for Macmillan, the Oxygen Therapy Centre, Glangwili special baby unit, the Wales Air Ambulance and Eglwyswrw YFC.
The local community joined together to help with sponsorship and kind donations of fuel, vehicles, food, water and clothing.

Setting off en route to Lands End on June 23 the group aimed to cycle 70 miles per day for five

.
The first leg ended in Llandovery and the second leg was from Llandovery to Chepstow.

The third and biggest day saw them leave Wales and head south bound ending in Exeter covering 100 miles in total.

The rain poured on the fourth day as they crossed through Devon and into Cornwall, ending up in Bodmin.

After five days of cycling, the young farmers reached Lands End on Saturday, June 27 having covered 352 miles in total.

Lucy Williams said: “The journey was all made possible with the support of three back up drivers who were the moving workshop, canteen, transport and moral support. The journey was definitely memorable for all involved, following in the footsteps of past members who also cycled to Lands end 30-years ago. This trip was made even more special with a proposal at Lands End.

“A massive thank you to everyone who supported, Barclays for their pound for pound sponsorship and the Trewern Arms for providing a meeting place on a few occasions.”

The presentation of the money raised took place on March 18 where the YFC announced they had raised a total of £16486.97.
