AMATEUR event rider Sophie Spiteri of Brongest near Newcastle Emlyn has recently become the first person in Wales to be selected to join the ‘Leg Up for Talent’ programme and now has five sponsors under her wing.

The programme is revolutionary in the way that uses the collective social media activities of its LegUpforTalent Stars on Facebook to increase the exposure to the equestrian community of sponsor’s brands and business activities.

Sophie said: "Traditionally, sponsorship is available only to a limited few professionals at the top of our sport, who are able to provide sufficient media exposure to satisfy sponsorship investment. At grassroots level, sponsorship is even more difficult to secure, being mainly based on the generosity and goodwill of companies or passionate individuals.

"Yet, it is particularly at this level that funding is essential if the early interest of young talent is to be embraced and ability nurtured; so that with continued commitment, passion and ambition they can one day against all odds represent their country."

Currently with five sponsors on board the programme, she hopes to secure another five over the coming months. Her sponsors include Cel Aeron Equestrian Centre in Aberaeron, Aberystwyth University, Horsezone UK and Ireland, Equitop Myoplast and the Agri Trader based locally.

Working as a full-time marketing officer, with the Royal Mencap Society, she fits her horse riding around her work.

"I currently compete my main horse Bold Move at FEI 1* level," said Sophie. "We are also competing at Intermediate level across the country with BE. I have produced the gelding over the last 11 years and I feel we have a fantastic connection.

"We have recently qualified to compete at 2* level and will look forward to this next season. I also have Bold Move’s nephew who I hope will follow in his footsteps over the coming seasons. I eat, sleep and breathe eventing and have my sights firmly set on a 3* one day!"

She has thanked those supporting her.

"I would like to take the opportunity to thank my current sponsors for their ongoing support over recent months and I am thoroughly looking forward to the eventing season getting under way.

"The programme has given me a fantastic opportunity to work with both local and national brands across the UK," concluded Sophie who is currently training ahead of a trip to Tatersalls Country fair in June where they will compete in their first ever CCI1* event.
