Coleg Ceredigion staff and students were recently under the spotlight for a hit television show featuring some of the biggest celebrity names in Wales.

Popular Welsh celebrity cookery series Pryd o Sêr returned to S4C last week, with a plateful of famous Welsh stars all hoping not to bite off more than they can chew in the kitchen.

One of the episodes, which will be screened on S4C on Sunday, February 7 and was filmed at Coleg Ceredigion Cardigan’s on-campus training restaurant, Bwyty Maes y Parc and its industry-standard kitchen facilities.

The eight celebrities consisted of three actors, including BAFTA Cymru's best actress winner Rhian Morgan; fellow actress and former Pobol y Cwm star Shelley Rees, and William Thomas who starred in Twin Town and Dan y Wenallt opposite Rhys Ifans.

Alongside them will be WWE championship wrestler Barri Griffiths, and former Welsh football international Owain Tudur Jones.

The singers participating are John Jones, one-half of popular Welsh country singing duo John ac Alun, and singer and entertainer Caryl Parry Jones. Competing alongside will be glamour model, Jess Davies originally from the Aberystwyth area.

During the challenge filmed at the Cardigan campus the celebrities had to prove their mettle under pressure by cooking for a full capacity restaurant of members of Merched y Wawr and the restaurant’s regular customers.

Throughout the challenge, Coleg Ceredigion professional cookery lecturers, Huw Morgan and Valerie Williams, provided the celebrities with expert advice and support while the students provided assistance by running various sections within the kitchens as they would in a professional environment.

“This was an amazing experience for our students and provided them with a valuable real life experience of working in a busy kitchen; and additionally, under the pressure of the camera spotlight,” explained Huw Morgan, professional cookery lecturer.

“Rather than working as commis chefs, our students played a crucial role in assisting and coaching the Celebrities throughout their challenge. I’m very proud of all students and staff who took part in what was a very successful, busy and satisfying experience”

During the series, the celebrities received additional training from some of the best chefs in Wales; Aled Williams, a head chef at Michelin starred Northcote Restaurant, Lancashire; and Mark Threadgill, head chef at Portmeirion. In addition to preparing a three course meal for Merched y Wawr, the cooks also had to prepare a meal for members of Young Farmers Wales.

This year's series was filmed in Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire; with the final round taking place at the Cliff Hotel, Gwbert, Cardigan.

"What the stars achieve during the course of the series is amazing. They astonish me every year. It's not a set-up, we don't hide anything and it's a case of sink or swim. We'll see tears and laughter as the celebrities deal with the heat of the kitchen. As a judge, I'm not trying to be mean and by the end, the celebrities realise that. They're proud of what they've achieved.”

Coleg Ceredigion Principal Jacqui Weatherburn said: “Coleg Ceredigion was delighted to host some of our best known Welsh stars to show off their culinary skills at our Cardigan Campus Training restaurant and Kitchen. It was a real experience for the students and the staff to work alongside guests and crew. I can’t wait to see which team prevails at the end of the series!”
