A HERO who entered a burning house to save his neighbour's life has received an award for his role in the dramatic rescue.

Richard Coombs, of Newcastle Emlyn, was recognised at the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service’s ‘Celebrating Success’ awards ceremony in Swansea’s Brangwyn Hall on Wednesday.

He picked up the Chief Fire Officer’s Exceptional Achievement Award which is awarded to an individual or team that has demonstrated exceptional achievement or courage.

The award follows Mr Coombs' actions in the early hours of September 7.

Chief Fire Officer, Chris Davies said: "Mr Coombs was awoken by the sound of an explosion in a neighbouring property in Bryngwyn, Newcastle Emlyn. As he approached the address, Mr Coombs could see that the property was well alight, engulfed in fire with smoke billowing from the entrance door and windows.

“On speaking to neighbours, Mr Coombs was informed that the owner, Mr Neal, was still inside the property and could be heard calling for help.

“Despite the fact that the property was well alight and heavily smoke logged, and with scant regard for his own safety, Mr Coombs entered the property, located Mr Neal in the hallway and dragged him to safety via the porch at the front of the house.

"Shortly afterwards the porch collapsed as a result of the intensity of the fire.

“It is without doubt that the actions of Mr Coombs prevent tragedy at this incident and his brave and selfless act, under an extreme and risky situation, saved the life of a neighbour."

The awards night, hosted by BBC journalist and broadcaster Siân Lloyd, not only recognised and celebrated the outstanding achievements made by Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service staff, but also members of the community, young people and organisations that assist the fire service to make our communities safer places to live, work and visit.
