TALENTED young artists from the area have impressed the judges of a competition run by a Newport gallery.

Secondary school pupils in Pembrokeshire, Cardigan and Newcastle Emlyn, along with students from Pembrokeshire College and Coleg Ceredigion were invited to submit entries for the West Wales Young Artist competition organised by Helen Manley Jones, who runs The Gallery Yr Oriel in Newport.

She said: “We were thrilled to receive 43 entries. The judging for the top three was an extremely difficult task.

“A big congratulations to all of them, it was a high standard all round.”

Young adults aged 16 to 25, were asked to create work on the theme “out of the blue”.

Theo Crutchley-Mack from Cardigan won the over 20 age group, and Ieuan Thomas from Ysgol Bro Gwaun, Fishguard, and Owen Mount Stevens from Tasker Milward, Haverfordwest, took joint first place in the under 20 age group.

Joint second place went to Nia Tyrrell of Ysgol Bro Gwaun, Anastasia Cooper of Tasker Milward and Lyneth Allen of Ysgol Bro Gwaun.

The top three winners will join the gallery in London for Welsh Art Week in March 2016.

Prizes will be presented at the Winners/Christmas Show on Friday, December 11, at The Gallery Yr Oriel, 6pm to 8pm, where all six artists will show their work.

The Christmas Show will also feature new seasonal work from Alice Tennant, Annette de Mestre, Denis Curry, Lilwen Lewis, Lyndon Thomas, Penny d. Jones, Gillian McDonald, Ro Rogers, Steve Wilson and Wynne Jenkins. All welcome.
