THE Alzheimer’s Society will be hosting a free walk open to all through Newcastle Emlyn town in partnership with Walking Well Carmarthenshire next week.

The event, being held on Wednesday, August 12, is part of the ‘Try Something New' project.

The aim of the group is to reduce social isolation by providing an opportunity for people to meet in a relaxed, safe environment and to maintain their enjoyment of walking.

Group co-ordinator Cheryl Davies said: "This group was set up as I had heard several people comment that they enjoyed walking, and thought that it would be a great activity to run over the summer months.

"Some of the people with dementia had stopped walking and in these cases the reason for them stopping going walking was not a physical or medical problem but lack of confidence. Family members were also reluctant for their loved ones to go out walking in case they become disorientated and confused."

The group hopes to support people with dementia and their carers, but anyone can join in the walks.

"Our final walk is planned outside Carmarthenshire at the flagship fundraising event; the Memory Walk in Swansea," added Cheryl. "People are encouraged to come along and support the Alzheimer’s Society and raise some money if they want to. We have also arranged a fundraising group called ‘Alzheimer’s Society Walking Well Carms."
