The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) continues its collaboration with Picturehouse Entertainment ‘Live from Stratford-upon-Avon’.

It’s a programme to screen its productions live from Shakespeare’s hometown.

The Merchant of Venice is next in the season of plays and is screening at Theatr Mwldan, Cardigan on Monday, August 10 at 7.00pm.

Three caskets of gold, silver and lead have been left to Portia, Belmont’s wealthy heiress, in her father’s will.

Portia is obliged to marry the man who chooses the casket that contains her picture. Suitors come from throughout the world to try to win her hand.

In Venice, Bassanio is determined to woo Portia for himself. To finance his suit he asks his friend Antonio, a rich merchant, to lend him money.

Short of funds because all his ships are at sea, Antonio borrows the money from Shylock, a Jewish money lender whom he has previously insulted for his high rates of interest.

Shylock proposes a bond whereby failure to repay the debt by an agreed date will entitle him to a pound of Antonio’s flesh.

That night, Bassanio’s friend Lorenzo, a young Christian, elopes with Shylock’s daughter Jessica. Jessica brings with her money and jewels stolen from her father.

Shylock, distraught at the loss of his daughter and his assets, seizes on the news that Antonio’s ships have been lost at sea and demands payment of his bond.

Tickets are £12.50 (£11.50) and are available to book from Theatr Mwldan’s Box Office on 01239 621200, online or via smart phone at www.mwldan.co.uk
