There’s a great double bill of poets guesting at the next Cellar Bards event in Cardigan – and there will be music too.

Popular performance poet and Bards regular Dave Urwin and Martin Locock, from the Red Heron performance group in Lampeter are sharing the headline spot on Friday, July 31from 8pm.

Martin Locock is an archaeologist by training, and this is reflected in his poetry, which is rooted in place and time. He has lived in Wales for 25 years and has published five collections of poetry, the most recent being The Thought of Fresh Rain and Bright Silence: A month in haiku.

He works as a project manager at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David in Carmarthen. He is a member of Lampeter Writers' Workshop and the Red Heron performance group.

Dave Urwin, who lives on a smallholding in the Preselis, is popular over a wide area of south and west Wales for his humorous performance poetry.

He is also known for his thought-provoking poems on nature, rural life, human relationships and the difficulties of human existence.

He has been writing poetry for 40 years and his first collection, Towards Humanity, was published in April. Some of his readings at the Cellar Bards will be accompanied by the wonderful playing of saxophonist Doug Bransden.

They will be at the Cellar Bards on Friday, July 31, in the Castle Café Cellar Bar, Cardigan SA43 1HU.

Doors and the bar open at 7.30pm, the event starts at 8pm. Entry is £3.

As always, there will be open mic spots (max five minutes each) for writers of poetry, short stories, micro-fiction and novels. Just put your name down at the door if you want to read.

Or go along to listen to a great variety of spoken word performances.

There is no Cellar Bards meet in August. Guests at the next Cellar Bards event on Friday, September 25, will be two local writers, who have both recently published collections of their work.

They are award winning short story writer and poet, Maggie Harris, and poet Jackie Biggs, who will publish her debut collection in September. Same times, same prices, same open mic options.
