A WELL-known figure in public life, sporting and other circles and a benefactor of worthy causes Ian Gollop of St Dogmaels died at the weekend aged 79.

A retired public school headmaster Mr. Gollop resided for many years at Sherwood House, taking an active part in village life as a member and past chairman of the community council.

He served St Dogmaels, Moylegrove and Nevern on Pembrokeshire County Council before standing down due to ill health in September 2009.

Mr. Gollop was a faithful member of St. Thomas’s Church, raising funds through coffee mornings at his home overlooking the River Teifi, and was a big supporter of various organisations in the community.

Rugby was close to his heart and especially Cardigan Rugby Club where he succeeded his late mother Mrs Victoria Gollop as life president.

He was a generous benefactor of many groups and charities in the Cardigan area and further afield, including Llandovery College where he sponsored an annual scholarship and was patron of Cardigan Cancer Care.

The funeral of Ralph Ian Hamilton Gollop is being held this Saturday with a public service at his beloved St. Thomas’ Church at 11am.

There are no flowers by request but donations in lieu, if desired, to the Hypobaric Chamber (MS) Cardigan or Cardigan Cancer Care, c/o Colin Phillips, Funeral Director, Morgan Street, Cardigan.
