An Awareness and Fun Day will be held in Newport Memorial Hall, 11am to 4.15pm, March 10.

The event has been organised by Newport Community Forum, and aims to reach out to community members of all ages.

There will be opportunity to try Tai Chi, painting, clay modelling, have a manicure, hand and arm massage, have y blood pressure tested and watch a belly fit demonstration.

There will also be a chance to learn about gentle exercises that can be practiced at home, and hear about healthy living and lifestyle, advice on home security, fire prevention and preparing for floods, have electric blankets tested and property encrypted and more.

Visitors can find out about and consult many of the public, private and voluntary services, -from the Health Board, Local Authority, Surgery, School, Playgroup and Kids Club, National Park, Police, Fire Services, and about a dozen local Agencies such as Age Concern and Care and Repair as well as the National Commissioner for Older People’s Road Show. Members of the Town Council, PCC and National Park representatives will be available to discuss the future of Newport library and TIC.

Newport’s Neighbourhood Support Groups will explain their work and hope to encourage new volunteers.

Representatives from Newport community activity groups will showcase what they do and encourage people to join.

There will be another chance to get some training in using the public access defibrillator and some basic first aid training.

And Newport will be launching its Good Neighbour Scheme and announcing the results of a Newport’s Unsung Hero Award and a Children’s Competition to draw a good neighbour, as well as a Healthy Baking Competition. Children from Ysgol Bro Ingli will sing at the event.

Carningli and Newport WI will serve tea and home-made cake and biscuits all day

The Forum has produced an accompanying booklet describing local neighbourhood voluntary support groups, which has gone to all Newport households, and can be picked up from pharmacy, surgery and shops.
