To celebrate St David’s Day, the Red Cross is inviting local people to attend an open event at The Guildhall in Cardigan to learn about various services provided by the charity in Ceredigion and chat to staff and existing volunteers about the roles available.

Refreshments and traditional Welsh food will be provided.

The event takes place on Monday, March 2 at The Guildhall, from 11am and 3pm.

Dewi Jones, volunteering development worker at the Red Cross, said: “Recent research by Bangor University and Wales Council for Voluntary Action (WCVA) shows there is a need within the voluntary sector for volunteers who can speak Welsh. The Red Cross are committed to meeting this need and recognise the importance of being able to offer our services to Welsh-speaking beneficiaries in their language of choice.”

The Red Cross are looking for more volunteers to support its Gofal service, which helps vulnerable and isolated people across North Wales and recently won a WCVA Third Sector Award.

Other services provided by the charity that need additional volunteers include a home from hospital and patient transfer service. First aid volunteers also cover sporting and public events, emergency response volunteers are deployed at times of crisis such as during severe weather, and retail volunteers help the smooth running of Red Cross shops.

Dewi continued: “Volunteering is hugely rewarding and we have lots of opportunities available for people to find a role that suits them. We are a very friendly team and I ask anyone who could offer a couple of hours a week to contact us and learn more about the varied work of the Red Cross – there really is something for everyone.”
