A Parcllyn man who used cannabis to deal with anxiety has ‘turned his life around’, a court heard last week.

Mathew James Smith, aged 31, of 4 Hillfield Road, pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis, when he appeared before Aberystwyth magistrates on Wednesday.

The court heard that police were called to search the defendant on November 17, after the smell of cannabis was found to be coming from his car.

A bag under the passenger’s seat was found to contain 1.5g of herbal cannabis.

Dennis Davies, prosecuting, said: “He told the police it was for his own use and made a full admission to the officer.”

Alan Lewis, defending, said his client had fully cooperated with the police, and signed a document at the scene, meaning he did not need to be taken to the station to be interviewed and saved the police valuable time, saving the tax payers money.

He said: “He was suffering from anxiety and used cannabis to relieve him of this in November. He has now turned his life around and is looking for work.”

Mr Lewis added that a very small amount of the Class B drug was found, estimated to be worth £10 to £15.

Magistrates imposed a six month conditional discharge and ordered Smith to pay £85 court costs and a £15 victim surcharge.

A destruction order was made for the seized drugs.
