A local mechanic has been banned from getting behind the wheel after driving while unfit through drugs.

Zak Grant Rees, aged 18, of 6 Davies Street, Pencader, pleaded guilty to the offence when he appeared before Aberystwyth magistrates on Wednesday.

Nick Newton, prosecuting, told the court that police on patrol on the B4336 on September 15 came across a car on the grass verge at a 90 degree angle to the road at 9.50pm.

He said: “The defendant was in the driver’s seat, the radio was on and playing loud music. He then got out of the vehicle and slumped against it.”

Officers noticed that Rees’ pupils were dilated, he was slurring and began smiling and laughing for no reason and wobbled backwards when he let go of the car door.

Blood analysis revealed he had ketamine, cannabis and a small amount of alcohol in his system.

Janan Jones, defending, handed magistrates a reference written by Rees’ employer.

She said: “He told me this morning that this was a life lesson. This was a silly night out, and it ended in tragedy for this young man because he will find himself without a job. He is a very good mechanic and he needs to drive a car.”

She added: “He says he will never ever touch any kind of illegal drugs again.”

Presiding magistrate Betty Griffiths said: “I am sure you feel today that you wish you could turn the clock back. It’s a glowing reference from your employer, but we have no option but to disqualify you.”

Rees was disqualified from driving for 12 months and fined £140. He was also ordered to pay £85 court costs and a £20 victim surcharge.
