Changes to the opening hours at Newport Library are being proposed by Pembrokeshire County Council

It follows a detailed review of library usage across the county which found that afternoons and evenings were much quieter than mornings.

The consultation proposes closing Newport Library an hour earlier on Wednesdays and Fridays. All other opening hours would remain the same.

Councillor Elwyn Morse, Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport and Leisure, said the County Council needs to make huge savings across many services in the wake of government spending cuts.

He also said that talks were still continuing with a number of other organisations on a different way of providing a library service in Newport.

“The options under discussion as part of these talks are now unlikely to deliver a sustainable solution in Newport by the required timescale,” said Cllr Morse.

“While talks continue, it is necessary to propose the amendments to the opening hours of Newport Library.”

Before any changes go ahead, the council wants to hear the opinions of library users in Newport.
