The Walter and Elizabeth Groombridge Award is awarded annually by the Committee of Management of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, if justified.

The award is given for the most meritorious service performed by the crew of an Atlantic 21 class lifeboat, or its successor, in this case the Atlantic 85 class lifeboat, Albatross.

This year, volunteers from the Cardigan Lifeboat Station were presented with the award in recognition of the service carried out on the evening of the 19 September 2013 when the Albatross was involved in the rescue of a couple cut off by the tide near Tresaith beach.

The 2013 award was given to Helmsman Len Walters, Crewmember Clive Williams, who also received a pair of inscribed binoculars for swimming into the sea to rescue the couple from the rocks, Crewmember Gemma Griffiths and Crewmember Aaran Walters. A framed letter was also presented to Cardigan RNLI Lifeboat Station.

The awards were presented by Mr Geoffrey Toms the son of the late Mrs Groombridge.
